Simplicity vs minimalism in design

"Simplicity is not the absence of clutter, that's a consequence of simplicity. Simplicity is somehow essentially describing the purpose and place of an object and product. The absence of clutter is just a clutter-free product."

-Jony Ive

The tech world in particular is prone to adding features because they are technologically possible. Ive's philosophy is a counterbalance to this trend. To relentlessly question whether each addition actually enhances a product or introduces something unnecessary.

His quote also touches on the misconception that simplicity is synonymous with a lack of ornamentation or complexity. But simplicity, as Ive described it, is inherently user-centric. It's about designing products that streamline tasks, save time and reduce mental load.

Minimalism may borrow from simplicity to create a clean aesthetic, simplicity affects how we interact with the objects around us.
